How a Craigslist Ad Started Bridesmaid for Hire

Some of the biggest changes in life don’t begin with a carefully crafted business plan.

They don’t start with investors, market research, or a five-year strategy.

Sometimes they begin with a random idea that seems so ridiculous you almost talk yourself out of pursuing it.

For me, that idea became Bridesmaid for Hire.

Long before I became known as the founder of Bridesmaid for Hire or the World’s First Professional Bridesmaid, I was simply a woman living in New York City with a habit of saying yes to unusual opportunities. I had spent years attending weddings, serving as a bridesmaid for friends and family, and watching the chaos that often unfolded behind the scenes of what looked like perfect celebrations.

The more weddings I attended, the more I noticed something nobody talked about.

The wedding industry had experts for almost everything. There were wedding planners, photographers, florists, caterers, makeup artists, DJs, officiants, and coordinators. But there was nobody helping couples navigate the emotional side of weddings.

Nobody was stepping in when friendships became strained.

Nobody was helping a maid of honor who felt overwhelmed by her responsibilities.

Nobody was calming nerves, mediating family disagreements, helping write speeches, or handling the dozens of small emotional crises that seem to accompany almost every wedding.

I kept thinking the same thing:

Someone should do that.

Eventually, I realized that someone might be me.

The Craigslist Ad That Changed My Life

One afternoon in 2014, I opened Craigslist and wrote an ad.

The concept was simple.

bridesmaid for hire craigslist ad

I offered my services as a professional bridesmaid for complete strangers.

I explained that I could help with wedding planning, bridal party support, emotional encouragement, speech writing, problem solving, and whatever else a bride might need.

When I hit publish, I didn’t think much about it.

In fact, I assumed almost nobody would respond.

At best, I thought a few curious people might send messages.

At worst, I figured the ad would disappear into the depths of Craigslist and be forgotten forever.

Instead, the opposite happened.

Within hours, people started sharing the ad.

Within days, journalists began reaching out.

Within weeks, the story had spread across the internet.

Suddenly, complete strangers wanted to know more about the woman who was offering herself as a bridesmaid for hire.

The response was overwhelming.

But it also revealed something important.

People understood the problem I was trying to solve.

Why People Connected With the Idea

Most people assumed the appeal of Bridesmaid for Hire was the novelty.

The idea sounded funny.

A professional bridesmaid?

It almost sounded fictional.

But the reason the story resonated had very little to do with the job title.

It had everything to do with the reality of weddings.

Weddings bring together families, friendships, expectations, emotions, and stress. They are joyful, but they can also be complicated. Many people feel enormous pressure to create a perfect experience while navigating difficult relationships, financial concerns, and major life transitions.

The more conversations I had with potential clients, the more I realized how many people felt alone during the process.

Some didn’t have close friends who could take on traditional bridal party roles.

Some were dealing with family conflict.

Some wanted advice from someone who had seen hundreds of weddings.

Some simply needed support.

The business wasn’t really about standing beside someone in a matching dress.

It was about helping people feel less overwhelmed.

The First Weddings

When I started working with my earliest clients, I had no idea what to expect.

Every wedding was different.

Every family was different.

Every challenge was different.

One weekend, I might be helping a bride organize a chaotic bridal party.

The next, I might be helping write a speech, coordinate logistics, or calm nerves before a ceremony.

What surprised me most was how quickly people trusted me.

I often entered their lives as a stranger.

Yet within days, they were sharing fears, frustrations, insecurities, and stories they hadn’t told many other people.

Weddings have a way of accelerating intimacy.

People become vulnerable when they’re standing on the edge of a major life milestone.

Being invited into those moments was an incredible responsibility.

It was also the part of the job I loved most.

Becoming the World’s First Professional Bridesmaid

As media coverage expanded, people started referring to me as the World’s First Professional Bridesmaid.

The title wasn’t something I created.

It emerged naturally because nobody had really done this before.

The business occupied a space between wedding planning, emotional support, friendship, coaching, and problem solving.

There wasn’t a clear category for it.

The phrase stuck.

Soon, Bridesmaid for Hire became known around the world.

What had started as a Craigslist experiment evolved into a legitimate business serving clients across the country.

The story appeared in newspapers, magazines, television segments, podcasts, and websites.

Every interview seemed to generate another question.

People wanted to know what happened behind the scenes.

They wanted to know the craziest wedding stories.

They wanted to know whether the job was real.

The answer was always yes.

The job was very real.

And it was teaching me far more about people than it was teaching me about weddings.

The Stories Behind the Business

One of the unexpected outcomes of Bridesmaid for Hire was the collection of stories it gave me.

After attending wedding after wedding, I began noticing patterns.

The details changed.

The venues changed.

The cities changed.

But many of the emotions remained the same.

People worried about disappointing others.

They worried about making the right decisions.

They worried about friendships changing, families growing apart, and whether they were doing enough.

Over time, I filled notebooks with observations.

At first, I wrote things down simply because I didn’t want to forget them.

Eventually, I realized those notes were becoming something larger.

They were becoming a book.

How Bridesmaid for Hire Inspired My Writing Career

Without Bridesmaid for Hire, I don’t think I would have become an author.

The business provided more than stories.

It provided perspective.

It allowed me to witness people during moments of incredible vulnerability and transformation.

Those experiences eventually inspired Always a Bridesmaid (For Hire), a memoir about the adventures, lessons, and surprises that came from becoming a professional bridesmaid.

The book gave me an opportunity to share what happened behind the headlines.

Readers often assume the most unusual part of the story is the job itself.

For me, the most fascinating part was always the people.

The memoir opened the door to additional books, including All My Friends Are Engaged and Finally the Bride, each exploring different aspects of relationships, adulthood, and personal growth.

What I Learned From Saying Yes

Looking back, the lesson isn’t that everyone should post a Craigslist ad.

The lesson is that some opportunities arrive disguised as ridiculous ideas.

When I posted that ad, I wasn’t trying to build a business.

I wasn’t trying to become a speaker, author, entrepreneur, or public figure.

I was simply following a curiosity.

I wanted to see what would happen.

What happened was far bigger than anything I could have imagined.

The ad introduced me to hundreds of people.

It created friendships.

It opened doors.

It challenged me.

It changed my career.

Most importantly, it reminded me that the best opportunities often come from taking chances on ideas that don’t make sense to anyone else.

More Than a Craigslist Ad

Today, it’s easy to look at Bridesmaid for Hire and see a business.

But when I think about the story, I don’t think about the company first.

I think about the people.

I think about the brides who trusted me.

The families who welcomed me.

The friendships I watched evolve.

The lessons I learned.

The stories I carried home.

Bridesmaid for Hire started with a Craigslist ad.

But what it became was so much bigger than that.

It became a reminder that sometimes one small decision can completely alter the direction of your life.

And sometimes the idea that sounds the most ridiculous is the one worth pursuing.
